The Living Culture Exhibition (LCE) is a digital immersive exhibition that utilises Virtual Reality (VR) technology to bring to life a physical exhibition first pioneered during the Coventry City of Culture year in 2021.
The Living Culture Exhibition is a daring invitation to breathe African civilisation from BC 2000 to 2025 through the mouthpiece of the Djali, the traditional keeper of African indigenous history.
The exhibition features an illustration of the journey through the history of how Africans lived before slavery and colonialism, focusing on Governance, Spirituality, Science and Medicine, Military, and Architecture. It continues with an emotional depiction of the Transatlantic slave trade, Life in the ‘New World’, Resistance, and Independence. And then, the events of the present remind us of the past and the learning and healing that continue to date.
The exhibition challenges embedded stereotypes and opens up a dialogue on redesigning and readdressing perceptions of people from Africa to foster a more inclusive society.
This three-dimensional exhibition aims to immerse users in a simulated environment, typically using a headset that tracks head movements and displays a 3D world. Unlike traditional screens, VR creates an interactive experience where users can look around and interact with virtual objects as if they were real.
